What’s a game actually like?

You’re trying to get a clear shot at another player’s sensors without giving them an easy shot at yours. That might mean finding a position overlooking a busy route, moving with a teammate or taking the long way round while everyone else is watching the obvious entrance.

The equipment registers hits electronically, so there are no paintballs or BBs. Depending on the game, you might be chasing an individual score, protecting a base or helping your team complete an objective. Staff explain the scoring and what happens when you’re tagged before you head in.

Indoor arena or outdoor field?

Indoor laser tag often uses lighting, sound and a maze of barriers and passageways. You’ll spend the first few minutes learning your way around, then start recognising the places where you keep getting caught out.

Outdoor sessions can give you more ground to cover, with trees, buildings or purpose-built obstacles between the teams. The setting makes a difference: look at the venue’s photos rather than assuming every laser tag game is the same.

Never played before?

The venue supplies the game equipment and shows you how to use it. You don’t need to know the arena or arrive with a set of tactics. Listen to the briefing, check how the scoring works and use the first round to get your bearings.

Ask what to wear, particularly for outdoor sessions. Comfortable movement matters more than looking the part, and the venue can tell you what footwear suits its playing area.

Check what you’re booking

Find out how many games are included and how long each lasts. A booking described as an hour might include getting equipped, the briefing and breaks between rounds.

For a party, check whether your group has the arena to itself or joins other players, and whether food or a party room is included. If adults want to join in, ask about mixed-age sessions when you book.

Find somewhere to play

Explore indoor arenas and outdoor laser tag venues, then ask the operator about the sessions available.
